Electronic village of Abingdon “91st Day”
Subcommittee MINUTES 25 August, 1999
12:30 PM The
scheduled meeting of the Electronic Village of Abingdon “91st Day”
Subcommittee held in the Johnston Memorial Hospital Cafeteria was opened by
Albert C. Bradley, Secretary, in the absence of the Chairman and
Vice-Chairman. There were eight
participants present. These
included:
The
minutes of the 28 July 1999 meeting were approved as presented upon motion of
John Mongle, seconded by Ray Millsap and unanimously approved. The
next item for review was the status of new connections, including:
The first agenda item was that of a report from the Website Committee. This committee, consisting of Mathew
Matt, Chris Edwards, John Mongle and Eric Schuler was appointed at the 7/28/99
meeting to review the EVA Website and make recommendations for updating the
site. Mathew Matt reported that
the committee had met a couple of times since the last regular EVA meeting and
had formulated some possibilities. The
E V A web page is currently housed on an old server at NetAccess and they wish
to move it to the Municipal Building provided that moving the page did not
pose a problem for NetAccess. Once
relocated on the Town's server, the page could be mirrored at an alternative
location, such as the Public Library or the Public Schools for security
purposes. Some other
possibilities that were discussed included such things as the EVA service
application forms, various reports, meeting minutes, maps of the EVA system
and others items including the possibility of allocating limited space to host
web pages for nonprofit groups. Ray
Millsap suggested that we review the findings of the previous Content
Committee to be sure this had not been rejected before, but that these were
good ideas for consideration. John
Mongle stated that we could make much better use of EVA's marketing potential
and that the adoption of several of these suggestions would further that goal. Jean Luker suggested that we try to
add some educational materials for children; oral histories, readings by Lou
Crabtree and the Walking Tour of Abingdon Homes were suggested as
possibilities for that. Eric
Schuler stated that this committee really wanted to function as editors rather
than as writers of content. The
report of the Website Committee was accepted.
The only other agenda item was to note that some repairs had been
necessary as the result of a recent storm at two locations - PIM (160 E. Main
St.) and the Abingdon, Virginian (170 E. Main St.). Al Bradley and Matt Matt had replaced
a hub in the PIM office that serves both offices. Additionally, a new shielded service
wire that connects the Abingdon, Virginian to the hub inside the PIM office
will be installed. There
being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:45 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
