Electronic village of Abingdon “91st Day”
Subcommittee MINUTES 27 October, 1999
12:30 PM The
scheduled meeting of the Electronic Village of Abingdon “91st Day”
Subcommittee held in the Johnston Memorial Hospital Cafeteria was opened by. There were 10 participants present. These included:
The
minutes of the 29 September 1999 meeting were approved as presented. The
next item for review was the status of new connections, including:
The first agenda item was that of an announcement that Matt Matt had
recently completed a Siecor class in Hickory, NC on terminating and splicing
fiber. Dr. Moore noted that we
could now do some of the individual connections on our own as a cost saving
measure.
Secondly, there arose a continuation of last month's discussion of the
single-mode fiber installed by Bristol Virginia Utilities Board and NetAccess
and of using the single mode fiber under installation by NetAccess as a means
of opening other cells of fiber networking tied to EVA in areas west of the
Town. Dr. Moore and Al Bradley
will investigate the financing of such measures further in light of the
pending status of setting EVA up as an authority.
The report from the EVA web site study group was that they were still
'plugging away' in the continuation of revising the web site. The pages are now physically relocated from NetAccess' server
and are now housed on a server in the Municipal Building. The group is still meeting to decide how to revise and
reactivate the site.
The latest development on videoconferencing is that Jay Cox, who could
not attend today's meeting, has volunteered that NetAccess will contribute $
5,000 toward the establishment of this project.
Dr. Moore reported that the estimate for the entire project is $25,000,
so this is a first step in that direction.
There followed a lengthy discussion of where a center for such services
should be placed and the Washington County Public Library was considered the
most likely because it is an EVA customer and centrally located. A public demonstration of videoconferencing was also
suggested as a measure to generate interest in these devices and uses. The assistance of NetAccess would be
invaluable as NetAccess already has some of the equipment that we could make
use of with Jay's permission. It
was decided that this event should be set prior to the Thanksgiving Holidays
if possible and maybe Johnston Memorial Hospital would be a good second
location for the videoconferencing demonstration, so that participants could
see someone from the hospital at the other end.
Steve Galyean suggested that the Washington County Chamber of Commerce
might be able to help promote the event and that it might best be scheduled
after office hours, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 Pm, for instance. Dr. Moore volunteered to try to seek the
approval of the hospital administration for the demonstration project.
The group was reminded of the seminar scheduled for 5 November at the
Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM sponsored
by the Southwest Virginia Regional Technical Council.
The next EVA meeting was rescheduled for 17 November at 12:30 PM at the
Johnston Memorial Hospital Cafeteria because of a potential conflict with the
Thanksgiving Holidays. There
being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:45 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
