"91st Day" Subcommittee
MINUTES
27 May 1998 12:00 Noon
The scheduled meeting of the Electronic Village of
Abingdon "91st Day" Subcommittee held in the Johnston Memorial
Hospital Cafeteria was opened by Albert C. Bradley, Secretary, in the
absence of both Dr. F. H. Moore, Chairman and Jay Cox, Vice-Chairman. There
were nine members present. These included:
Al Bradley, Secretary
Bill Chaffin
Randy Robertson
Jack White
Burt Bassham
Coni Patrick
Jean Luker
Bob Franklin
Chris Edwards
The minutes of the 22 April, 1998 meeting
were approved as presented.
Guests and new members were recognized; these included
Bob Franklin of NetAccess and Chris Edwards.
The matter of new connections was discussed. Mr. Bradley
noted that applications for connection had been received from CASA Computer
Service at 128 Russell Road and two separate connections were requested by
the Johnson, Scyphers and Austin law firm. One further request had been made
by the Morefield, Kendrick, Hess and Largen law firm at 190 East Main
Street. It was noted that the application from CASA Computers could be
handled shortly as a regular connection to the Plumb Alley West extension
and that there already existed a connection for the Morefield, Kendrick,
Hess and Largen application. The Johnson, Scyphers and Austin application
must be held for a final resolution of the method of connection. Randy
Robertson explained that this connection would be made along with the new
extension for Johnston Memorial Hospital and there existed some difficulty
as to the route to be followed for this purpose. The route chosen as the
best long-term solution for this extension to JMH involved an extension from
the existing EVA run at the corner of Plumb Alley and Pecan street, north on
Pecan Street, crossing Valley Street to Oak Hill Street and north on Oak
Hill Street to an existing set of poles leading into the rear of the
hospital structure. David Taverner suggests that this route would require
guy wires at points where there is no possibility of placing guy wires for
support of the poles. Randy Robertson and David will attempt to resolve this
problem as soon as they are able to get together.
The next item for discussion was that of the continued
need of some publicity effort to encourage others to share links with the
EVA home page at www.eva.org. Coni Patrick stated that Steve Galyean was
working on this matter with the Chamber of Commerce, but that Steve was not
present due to a schedule conflict. Coni stated that she had received a
request for a link to a person's site who was selling a product for a remedy
for psoriasis. Jack White suggested that if this were a local person and a
locally available product it was a suitable business opportunity and should
be allowed. This matter was generally agreed along the lines of Mr. White's
suggestion.
One further item for discussion included a recent article
in the Roanoke Times newspaper of 5/23/98, where the Governor had signed
into law the proposed bill that made illegal any attempt by local
governments to operate a telecommunications system, previously known as
House Bill 335. Bill Chaffin stated that the bill contains five sentences
that if carefully read could have just the opposite meaning. The Town of
Abingdon, by reference, is exempted from this law. Al Bradley noted that
since the law expired in the year 2000, this would likely come before the
Virginia Legislature again at its next term, since the commercial interests
involved in promoting this legislation would not allow it to lapse.
Bill Chaffin suggested that when there are future
meetings to be held in the JMH cafeteria, that we begin at 11:30 in order to
be served and seated earlier. This suggestion was accepted.
There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted,
Albert C. Bradley,
Secretary
