electronic village of abingdon "91st Day" Subcommittee
MINUTES
11 July 1997 7:30 P. M.
The scheduled meeting of the Electronic Village of Abingdon "91st Day" Subcommittee held in the Town of Abingdon Coomes Recreation Center was opened by Vice Chairman Jay Cox. There were ten members present. These included:
This meeting was held to discuss potential applications that could be placed into immediate use over the EVA network. Ray Millsap stated that the Content Committee was working on a virtual walking tour, had discussed the Town Server applications such as meeting minutes, and other possibilities for that server and had expressed a great deal of interest in a Law Library. Jay Cox wondered if a cd-rom game such as Microsoft Golf could be made available over the EVA system for general use for a fixed period, for instance one week, then another application such as an encyclopedia could be made available and even educational games for children. The use of public domain and shareware games was discussed. Jay Cox also suggested video conferencing as a possible use of the fiber network. Jay stated that NetAccess was investing in two inexpensive videoconferencing units in order to try out one-on-one videoconferencing. This could be done well over the Town network. Ray Millsap suggested further use of minicams such as the one in use at the Municipal Building as a possibility. New versions of these cams have addressable IP connections. Ray suggested that some form of these cameras were an easily do-ableuse of the network. The planned Techno-Expo event was discussed in detail. This event will occur in October, 1997 and will further everyone’s education as to the use of computer networking. Steve Galyean stated that there was some interest in on line tourism packaging. This would include reservations for the theatre, accommodations and other services through the Abingdon Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Jean Luker stated that the newest software was called ‘cybrid’ software. This was a CD-ROM and links to the internet. Jean felt that some of these companies would buy in to the use of their software from the EVA system. She volunteered to explore this possibility. Jay Cox suggested that he and Randy Robertson work on a game or other application to be made available over the EVA system as an immediate use and that they would then work with Coni Patrick on how to devise and post instructions for its use. Daveena Sexton remarked that EVA was already a hardware demonstration site and that the outcome of this meeting could mark a turn into a software demonstration site as well. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
