"91st Day" Subcommittee

MINUTES

25 June 1997 7:30 P. M.

The scheduled meeting of the Electronic Village of Abingdon "91st Day" Subcommittee held in the Town of Abingdon Municipal Building was opened by Vice Chairman Jay Cox. There were eight members present. These included:

Jay Cox, Vice-Chairman Coni Patrick
Al Bradley, Secretary Jean Luker
Ray Millsap David Taverner
Steve Galyean Burt Bassham

The minutes of the 21 May 1997 meeting were approved as presented.

The first item of business was to discuss a replacement for Karen McDonald as EVA Webmaster. Jay Cox stated that this was an important job and involved a lot of coordination. Ray Millsap suggested that we let the Contents Committee take the matter up at their meeting scheduled for 30 June.

Ray Millsap also stated that the Contents Committee at their upcoming meeting would be "brainstorming" to come up with new and useful applications for EVA. There were already some ideas such as photos, a virtual walking tour, and more interactive applications. The content could also include expansion of existing pages for the schools, Barter Theatre and links to others like Emory & Henry College.

New potential drops were discussed. The newest included Virginia Gas and their computer network. Virginia Gas has remote offices in Cedar Bluff and Castlewood and would use the EVA network to perform accounting functions for those remote offices.

The Presbyterian Church is another new account and could include a logical extension to the Episcopal Church next door.

Jay Cox discussed a group to help funnel information to the EVA Webmaster, but it was thought that the Contents Committee could help with this.

Jean Luker thought that there was an opportunity for municipal functions such as paying taxes. This will be incorporated in the forthcoming www.abingdon.com program by the Town. Use of the Town’s future GIS program as an application over the network was also discussed.

Jay Cox suggested that we have a short meeting at 10:30 AM on 11 July at the Coomes Recreation Center for the purpose of deciding on something, such as a CD-ROM game application, to be used to demonstrate the utility of the network. This meeting was agreed upon.

The upcoming Techno Expo event sponsored by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and scheduled for October was discussed.

David Taverner stated that he needed to know more about the possible connection to Johnston Memorial Hospital and to the businesses around the hospital. Jay Cox suggested that a field trip might be in order. A survey of residents of the Court Street, Stonewall Heights and surrounding areas was suggested in order to determine the interest of residents of those general areas in EVA network service.

Aside from the short 11 July planning meeting, the next regular meeting of the E V A "91st Day" Subcommittee was set for 7:30 P. M. on 23 July 1997.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Albert C. Bradley,

Secretary
