electronic village of abingdon "91st Day" Subcommittee
MINUTES
4 December 1996 7:30 P. M.
The scheduled meeting of the 91st Day Subcommittee held in the Town of Abingdon Municipal Building was opened by Chairman F. H. Moore, Jr. There were seventeen members present. These included:
Minutes of the 4 June 1996 meeting were approved as presented.
Dr. Moore welcomed everyone, especially those attending for the first time. These included Sue Ray King, Matt Peltier, Jeff Peatross and Daveena Sexton. Dr. Moore then explained that the purpose for this meeting was to consider a proposal for an extension of the Electronic Village. Dr. Moore asked Bill Chaffin to explain the proposal.
Bill Chaffin reported that a local business, to be temporarily unnamed, may offer to make an extension of E V A at its cost in the Russell Road and Main Street areas to the west of the present system. Bill further noted that it was hoped that if this corporate citizen were able to spark the next movement of the E V A project, then other corporate citizens might well do likewise. Bill reminded us that Sprint and NetAccess had actually begun this process with their contribution to the Phase 1 demonstration project.
Dr. Moore further explained that the details of this proposal had not been finalized as yet, but that the question before the group tonight was whether to extend the Electronic Village to the west in order to connect this new proposed system with the existing system and also to the intervening businesses and residences along Plumb Alley in that direction.
Jean Luker stated that she saw an opportunity for E V A here, with the participation of corporations in the development of the system. Steve Laek stated that this was a very good offer and that there were many potential users along this route.
Dr. Moore then asked if anyone present disagreed with the proposal to expand the Electronic Village to the west in order to accommodate this offer. No one spoke in disagreement.
Jack White brought up the fact that there was really no official entity named "E V A" or "Electronic Village of Abingdon" for the various persons, firms and corporations to contract with. After some discussion of this matter, Mr. White agreed to look into what would be necessary for E V A to become a corporation or some other official entity.
Jackie Stevenson then introduced Jeff Peatross, who will be the new E V A Webmaster. Jeff stated that he was already hard at work on new E V A content and appearance that would ultimately include such things as the works of Lou Crabtree, excerpts from the Washington County News, presences of several groups including the Washington County Historical Society and William King Arts Center, as well as photos of Abingdon and festival information. Jeff asked everyone to look at the new E V A page and suggest other additions, alterations or corrections as may be noted. Jeff was particularly interested in increased input from businesses. Usage by the Martha Washington Inn, Barter Theatre, and the local bed and breakfast inns was discussed.
Ray Millsap stated that some of the comments he heard included the need for a "white pages" directory and increased real estate and church listings.
It was noted that signing up for the new Phase 2 E V A service was proceeding slowly and several people volunteered to assist with this work if Jay Cox and Al Bradley would instruct them. These included Sue Ray King, Jack White, Jean Luker and others.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted,
Albert C. Bradley, Secretary
