This meeting was postponed from its originally scheduled meeting date of 26 April, 2000, due to the Governor's Conference on "Technology as a Tool to Empower Individuals and Communities" held on that date and which many of the E V A group wished to attend.

The first agenda item was a discussion of the Governor's Conference held on 4/26/00 at the

Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. It was noted that in attendance at this conference were

Donald W. Upson, Secretary of Technology, and Claude A Allen, Secretarv of Health & Human

Resources. Dr. Moore also discussed the proposed development of properts' adjacent to the Higher

Education Center bv the Town.

The next agenda item was the reconfiguration of the E V A trunk system betv~'een the Sprint Central Office and Highlands Union Bank. A memo dated 1 May 2000 from Mathew Matt was included as follows:

We have made some significant changes in the fiber on Friday and Monday and I believe the change will please most everyone. Originally, the idea was to change the current backbone that we had from the CO to HUB from 10Mb/s to 100Mb/s via the new Nortel switches that we had. This worried me a little due to the fact that if something were to happen with the new, untested switches we would be out of luck. Eric Schuler (from the Library and Berkana Graphics) helped me considerably in the upgrade we performed. Below is how everything is now done. I have also attached updated EVA network documentation to reflect the changes made.

1.   Joe McCann and I recently moved a bank of media converters from the hospital to the CO.

2.      We (Eric and I) set up the new switches with an IP address to make them manageable from almost any location.

3.      The Berkana Graphics run had originally been set up to go through the bank. over fiber. to the CO.  We switched them over to go straight into HUB's fiber hubs.

4.      We then kept the current backbone in place that currently runs through the 3com switches that are already there.

5.      We used the Berkana Graphics fiber that ran from HUB to the CO to make a 100Mb run. (i.e. into media converters, then to the Nortel switches)

6.      For future reference to anyone involved, the Nortel Switches and the Allied Telesyn media converters will not auto negotiate. We had to go into the switches and manually set the links to 100 Mb. full duplex.

7.      The links immediately came up and all seems well.

8.      Berkana Graphics was kind enough to volunteer to be put at 100Mb (seeing as how they were originally a 100Mb customer), for testing purposes.

9.      We tested the throughput and got over 10Mb/s, meaning that we were definitely going through the new equipment.

10.    To be sure. we took down the 10Mb link temporarily and all still worked fine, meaning that the 100Mb link was up and running well.

I have some cleaning up left to do, but we seem to be up and running with a 100Mb backbone as a result of this work. An added bonus that we didn't foresee, is that we also have a redundant 10Mb backbone if the 100Mb line or equipment should fail. I may offer to hook up the other 100Mb customer. Linux Capital Group. and do some throughput tests throughout the week to see if we are indeed running at capacity.

Our next step in all of, this will be to upgrade NetAccess to 100 Mb so that the 100 Mb customers can actually reap the benefits of their greater connection speed. I hope to do this in the next week to week and a half. I will leave this up for at least that long to see if it will truly work for our purposes.

Thanks to Net Access (Bob Franklin and Jason). Sprint (Joe McCann, David Taverner, and Matthew Hill).and Berkana Graphics WCPL (Eric Schuler). for the help in making EVA a constantly changing (primarily for the better) effort.                                                        Thanks, Mattx3

The final agenda item was that of notice that the Town had issued Purchase Orders to Sprint for the extension of the E V A trunk along Trooper's Alley and for electronic equipment to be installed at the Abingdon Fire Department at 316 Park Street.

Jeff Webb handed out materials pertaining to the Youth Technology Corps sponsored by local businesses and the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center that will continue this vear.

The date of the next meeting was changed from its normal fourth Wednesday meeting date to the last Wednesday in May, or 31 May.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:50 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,

Albert C. Bradley,

Secretary
