“91st Day” Subcommittee

MINUTES

26 January 2000   12:30 PM

The scheduled meeting of the Electronic Village of Abingdon “91st Day” Subcommittee held in the Johnston Memorial Hospital Cafeteria was opened by Albert C. Bradley, Secretary in the absence of both the Chairman and Vice-Chairman.  There were 9 participants present.  These included:

Al Bradley, Secretary

Burt Bassham

Steve Galyean

Mathew Matt

Eric Schuler

John Mongle

Jack White

Ray Millsap

David Taverner

The minutes of the 7 November 1999 meeting were approved as presented on motion of Burt Bassham and seconded by Ray Millsap.

The next item for review was the status of new connections, including:

NAME

ADDRESS

COST

STATUS

Appalachian Sustainable Development

289 W. Main Street

$1,773.37

By Sprint (ordered)

Jack White Law Office

185 E. Valley Street

$1,150.00

By Town (ready)

The newly revised Application for Service was the next agenda item.  The group reviewed the application form and discussed it.  Mr. Bradley explained that the new form was revised to include the Town in the Troubleshooting Procedures on the back of the form.  The Town will now take a more active role in first reaction to a complaint.  There were two suggested revisions to the Service Application form.  One was to include the Town in the applicant’s declaration section on the front page; specifically “I authorize Sprint, EVA or their designated representatives to install such equipment as necessary to initiate network services.”  The second revision was on the back page and would increase response time from 4 hours to “24 hours or the next business day”.  The form was approved with these two corrections.

The next agenda item was a discussion of priorities for extensions of EVA facilities for budgetary purposes.  In random order, suggested areas for this included:

a.             Eastern Abingdon (East Main Street areas)

b.                   Northern Abingdon (Residential areas above JMH)

c.                    South Abingdon (Martha Washington Inn area)

d.                   Airport vicinity (-ies), including West Abingdon

e.             Other areas

The possibility of a study of market targets was discussed but no workable way of conducting such a study was actually found.  Under item e, above, other areas, Ray Millsap reminded us of the future Police Department and the recreation offices on West Main Street and also of the connection to the William King Regional Arts Center and County offices that may be in the offing.  Mr. Bradley stated that the Town was already considering items a & c, above for immediate extension.  Item c would be done in order to route a direct connection from the Town Shop and the Housing Authority to the Municipal Building, since the recent addition of a firewall had removed these two remote facilities from the Town’s network.  Routing of this connection would be a direct one from the Municipal Building, under Main Street at Chincapin Alley to Park Street, which could allow for extensions to other facilities and businesses in that vicinity.  Discussion of item d, above, mentioned that NetAccess did not as yet have the proposed single-mode fiber in place to connect its Abingdon network with that of Bristol.

After considerable further discussion it was decided that immediate priorities for EVA extensions should be as follows:

1st Priority       Eastern Abingdon (East Main Street areas), Northern Abingdon (Residential areas above JMH, South Abingdon (Martha Washington Inn area).

2nd Priority      Extension to the William King Regional Arts Center and County offices and future Police/Recreation offices on West Main Street.

3rd Priority      Airport vicinity (-ies), including West Abingdon.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:50 PM.

                                                                             Respectfully Submitted,

                                                                                                            Albert C. Bradley,

                                                                                                            Secretary
