EVA Connection Information

Connections to the Electronic Village of Abingdon are relatively simple. First, an application is made to NetAccess which is forwarded to the Town. After it is established that a connection can be made, the correct parts are ordered to make the connection. On the customer side, certain networking equipment may be required to complete an EVA connection. These include a media converter, a hub, and perhaps a firewall / gateway.

The recommended media converter is made by Allied Telesyn and is model number MC-13. These media converters generally cost less than $150. A hub is required to connect more than one computer up to the Fiber Optic Network. This can be any type of hub or switch, as long as they support the 10baseT or 100baseT standards.

One must realize that the Electronic Village is a Wide Area Network (WAN), and being so, is open to all internet traffic inside and outside of the network. Because of this, a firewall / gateway / proxy may be needed to secure your network from the outside world. This device separates your internal traffic from the outside world giving you security that you wouldn't otherwise have. Contact your network administrator or Mathew Matt at the Town of Abingdon for more information. He may be reached at mmatt@abingdon.com.
